Knee replacement by Smart Implants

Knee arthroplasty is a kind of surgical technique performed to relieve pain and also to restore the normal functions of the knee joint. It is commonly known as knee replacement. Currently, Knee replacement is performed for osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and also for some other knee diseases. Though knee replacement doesn't cure the osteoarthritis completely, 90% of people are undergoing this surgery just to get relief from pain and discomfort. 

The materials commonly used for artificial knees are the alloys of titanium, chromium and cobalt. The bearing portion of the knee joint should be wear and corrosion-resistant. Knee implant infection may happen for some people due to some autoimmune response occurred in the body triggered by metal hypersensitivity. Implant rejection is very rare.



Earlier, this surgery was performed to replace an older implant. But nowadays it is also being done for youngsters. It is tough for active people to undergo this kind of surgery again after 5-10 years. So, Researchers discovered a smart, self-powered knee implant which highly reduces the number of knee replacement surgeries.

The smart knee implant has built-in sensors that will certainly help the doctors about how much pressure is being put on an implant and also monitor which activity is negatively affecting that implant. The sensors used does not require a battery to recharge. Scientists used triboelectric energy which is a kind of energy that is collected from friction. If a person walks, those sensors are powered due to the friction of the micro surfaces that are coming into contact with each other.

These implants not only give feedback but also helps scientists to develop future implants. Surely, the combination of self-powered sensors as well as smart implants will reduce the number of knee replacement surgeries in future.
